Not only will you get to see 5 fabulous ports, including Hilo, Honolulu, Kauai and Maui - you also get to take four days of quilting classes during sea days!

Check out my two classes below!

Tropical Blooms

My sample quilt is just one of the many design possibilities you can make with the help of my 20-Degree Wedge Ruler.  This ruler is so fun for making hexagons! You may already be familiar with wedge block designs like Dresden Plate or hexagon block like Grandmother’s Flower Garden, but it's also really exciting to create different secondary designs with wedges. The construction for this quilt is not nearly as difficult as many traditional hexagon designs because the shapes are sewn together in rows, rather than using y-seam construction.

You'll spend the first day of class cutting your fabric wedges and placing them into a pleasing arrangement. This will be a day of playing and experimenting with fabric and color combinations. Then you'll sew your wedges together to make larger units. On the second day, you''ll join the units into rows and then sew the rows together. The finishing touch is appliquéing the flower motifs to the centers of each “bloom” by hand or machine.

Go Fish

Let the ocean be your playground as you create a unique underwater scene with tropical fish, coral, octopus, and jellies - there are an abundance of design possibilities.

Spend the first day of class creating a background for your underwater scene, using all the beautiful colors and textures of the ocean as inspiration for your palette. The piecing is fun and easy with 3” fabric strips that range in color value from light to dark. Students will be encouraged to bring extra strips for sharing, so everyone can choose from a wide range of fabrics.

The second day will take you back to many fond childhood experiences of coloring, cutting and pasting - but you'll use fusible web rather than glue. It’s a perfect, relaxing and creative way to sail the hours away. Learn how to easily make sea creatures, including a variety of fish, jellies and octopus to complete your design. I'll bring lots of patterns, templates and inspirational photos to help with cutting and color decisions. Your uniquely-designed sea creatures will be stitched onto your background with raw-edge fusible appliqué techniques.
